Tennis at Engel Obertal

The Tennisgemeinschaft Obertal has its grounds a good kilometre from the Engel. Our guests can use the three clay courts, and getting there is a short walk.

The courts sit a little higher up at the edge of the forest, in the heart of the Obertal countryside. Because they are so close, a game of tennis is easy to fit into a day of your holiday.

Two of the three courts have floodlights. The clubhouse also has a changing room and a shower.

Clay plays a little slower than many other surfaces. That makes for longer rallies and a gentle way back into the game, even if your last match was some time ago.

From the Engel, the path crosses the bridge and climbs to the Weiher. There you turn right onto the tarmac footpath and follow it to the tennis grounds. After around 15 minutes you reach the courts.

The route is also part of the Engel-Runde, our shortest running route. If you would like a slightly longer way back, follow the loop past the Lärchenhütte and along the Engelweg to the hotel.

The Tennisgemeinschaft Obertal was founded in the summer of 1976 by sixteen people from Obertal. Many members helped build the first court themselves. The grounds were opened in August 1977, and the third court followed in 1995.

The club and the Engel go back a long way too. The first annual general meeting was held at the hotel in 1977. From 1978 to 1994, the Engelpokal tournament brought tennis enthusiasts from the surrounding area to Obertal every year.

The clay courts are prepared for the season in spring and usually stay open into the autumn.

Back at the Engel, a visit to Wolke 7 is the natural next step. After a sauna or a few quiet lengths in the pool, the day's tennis winds down gently.
