Engel Obertal
Our philosophy
Engel Obertal has grown over generations. An inn on the River Murg became a wellness and gourmet resort in the heart of the Black Forest. What has not changed is the pleasure of welcoming guests in person and giving them a break that stays in the memory long afterwards.
Since 1780
Grown from an inn
The story of the Engel began in 1780 as a carters' inn and sausage kitchen right beside the Murg. After a fire, the house was rebuilt in 1938 where it stands today. Over the generations the inn became a hotel. Through it all, the close bond with Obertal and the joy of hosting have remained.
From generation to generation
A house that keeps growing
Each generation has taken the Engel a step further. Wolke 7 opened in 2001 and was extended to 5,000 m² in 2011. Since 2012 the hotel has been classified as five-star superior. In 2017 the Mankel family took over Engel Obertal and continues its story as part of the Fährhaus Collection.

Good hospitality cannot be scripted. It comes from people who are attentive, who listen and who enjoy being hosts. That is what shapes Engel Obertal. Personal and warm, with a feel for the right moment and without ever pushing themselves forward.

Time that belongs to you
Engel Obertal lies in a quiet side valley of the Black Forest. Here the day is allowed to slow down. Perhaps it begins with a few lengths at Wolke 7 and later leads out into the woods. In the evening, fine food awaits. And in between there is, above all, time for you.

Good food takes time
Our kitchen combines Swabian roots with international influences. It is not about grand gestures but about good produce, careful craft and a delight in flavour. And when the evening is going especially well, simply stay at the table a little longer.
